One of the most magical beings of our world
The octopus has two hearts that pump its blood into the gills, while the third allows for blood circulation throughout the body. Because of the copper they use to capture oxygen—not iron, as we do—their blood is actually blue.
The octopus has a brain for each arm (not tentacles!), plus a central one in charge of controlling the independent functioning of each arm: it may use them for grasping objects as if they were tools, the only invertebrate with this unique skill.
Another distinct feature of the octopus is the dedication the female puts into caring for her eggs, tirelessly blowing oxygen-rich water on them as they develop, and starving to death after giving everything to her offspring. Eventually, she will die at two and a half years of age at the latest. This is her legacy.
Yet... According to data, nearly 3,000 tons of octopuses are caught in Italy every year, this equates to hundreds of thousands of these sentient species being snatched from the sea in Italy alone.

In July 2012, a prominent group of scientists released the 'Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness', a formal acknowledgment that many non-human animals, including mammals, birds and cephalopods, also possess 'the neurological substrates that generate consciousness'
and as such are SENTIENT and having CONSCIOUSNESS
The Declaration was written by Philip Low and edited by Jaak Panksepp, Diana Reiss, David Edelman, Bruno Van Swinderen, Philip Low and Christof Koch.
The Declaration was then publicly proclaimed by three eminent neuroscientists, David Edelman of the Neurosciences Institute in La Jolla, California, Philip Low of Stanford University and Christof Koch of the California Institute of Technology.
The signing of this world's first and monumental declaration was also witnessed by some of the world's leading scientists including Professor Stephen Hawking.
This declaration is pivotal in the first step to humanity both understanding and harmonising with the natural world in a manner of respect and reverence... so as not to harm, subjugate, commodify or exploit... in the first steps to humanity fulfilling its destiny as Guardian of this world and acknowledging the non human rights of all species...
